Hank Stuever's funny, touching reports take us to everyday places where the increasingly unusual realities of today's world run rampant. Stuever-twice a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize-calls this terrain the American Elsewhere. He finds it by bypassing Big News and taking off ramps to places where seemingly ordinary people lead lives just slightly off-kilter. Stuever's Elsewhere extends through trailer parks, roller rinks, malls no longer sparkling, and suburbs where robot dogs growl and bored children jump off rooftops using Hefty-bag parachutes. From Star Wars conventions to credit disasters, from snipers to missing persons, there is always something happening in Elsewhere-and Hank Stuever never misses a scintilla of the action. In Off Ramp, his destinations include Plano, Texas, home of two friends both named Angie (Plano princesses) who turn home decor disasters over to a TV decorating show and wind up at war against orange carpet. In Washington D.C, we meet a pony-tailed sofa surgeon who confronts the mysteries of the universe and couches that won't go through doorways. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, a spiral-permed secretary begins an odyssey toward marriage that takes her from anxiety dreams (I'm walking down the aisle and nobody is looking at me or anything) to anxiety that is no dream. And we are there. We visit discount funeral homes (Let's say you're dead.), campgrounds where international bonds are formed (We are from Netherlands, and we are for two days wonderink, who it is you are storage facilities where America keeps its strangest secrets. We meet the men who drew the comic-book characters (including Wonder Woman) Stuever loved as a child professionalbowlers, waterbed aficionados, and some Texans on debris drives in search of pieces of the fallen Columbia shuttle. Finally, we travel to Stuever's hometown of Oklahoma City where the bombing of the Alfred P.Murrah federal building has created a kind of Elsewhere he has never seen b

We've got a lot of love for Nancy Sinatra. Of course, one of her most famous tunes was "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," and we always tried to imagine what kind of boots were going to "walk all over." Perhaps they were cowboy boots, or maybe a set of boots that would fit in with a punk crowd. Recently, we caught sight of these Dark Forces Boots and it's safe to say that these definitely fall into the category on ones that will "walk all over you."These jet black boots bring a powerful and sometimes sinister look to your costume. Since they're made of man-made synthetic faux leather, so you can be rest assured that no animals had to sacrifice themselves to make your feet look fabulous. Just slip them on with a your costume to add a deadly allure to it that will have you using these boots for walkin' just like Nancy would want!
Anonymous Halloween photographs from c.1875-1955--truly haunting Americana, with a foreword by David Lynch The photographs in "Haunted Air" provide an extraordinary glimpse into the traditions of this macabre festival from ages past, and form an important document of photographic history. These are the pictures of the dead: family portraits, mementos of the treasured, now unrecognizable, other. Torn from album pages, sold piecemeal for pennies and scattered, abandoned to melancholy chance, and the hands of strangers. The roots of Halloween lie in the ancient pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain, a feast to mark the death of the old year and the birth of the new. It was believed that on this night the veil separating the worlds of the living and the dead grew thin and ruptured, allowing spirits to pass through and walk unseen but not unheard amongst men. The advent of Christianity saw the pagan festival subsumed in All Souls' Day, when across Europe the dead were mourned and venerated. Children and the poor, often masked or in outlandish costume, wandered the night begging "soul cakes" in exchange for prayers, and fires burned to keep malevolent phantoms at bay. From Europe, the haunted tradition would quickly take root and flourish in the fertile soil of the New World. Feeding hungrily on fresh lore, consuming half-remembered tales of its own shadowy origins and rituals, Halloween was reborn in America. The pumpkin supplanted the carved turnip; costumes grew ever stranger, and celebrants both rural and urban seized gleefully on the festival's intoxicating, lawless spirit. For one wild night, the dead stared into the faces of the living and the living, ghoulishly masked and clad in tattered backwoods baroque, stared back.

This book is the work of a 21 year old Marine Corps Sergeant who fought in the battle of Khe Sanh South Vietnam. The author endured the hardships of the 77 day siege recording each day's events and his feelings in his diary. Rather than a historical account of the battle's significance or political ramifications, it is the personal story of one man's experience showing, in sometimes graphic detail, the effect such an intense war experience can have. Itis written in the words that were used by the young Marines and those words are not meant to be racist or derogatory. This individual account of life "inside the wire" provides an incredibly detailed and poignant illustration of the everyday infantrymen who found a way to exhibit extraordinary courage despite abhorrent conditions. The day to day events flow well from one subject/day to the next and crescendos to the incredible story of the author being wounded and whisked from the battlefield and shipped "back to the world." Walk with this young Marine as he struggles to keep his men on task, prepared for what ever maycome and most importantly, alive. Listen while he talks to his superiors on the radio trying to give a tactical assessment of the situation and bring help to his pinned down platoon. Be with him when he is holding a dying fellow Marine and in one instant goes from having his head on the chest of his dead friend to pulling himself together and taking charge of the platoon. Laugh with him as the stories are told about the happenings of fellow Marines returning from R&R and the girls in Hong Kong and Bangkok. The Battle for Khe Sanh is among some of the most important in American military history and a significant source ofpride for military veterans and civilians alike. Even President Barack Obama mentioned the Battle for Khe Sanh in his inaugural speech along with other great American battles like Gettysburg and Normandy. Jim Oyster is a decorated Marine Corps veteran of the Battle of Khe Sanh and additional engagements in the Vietnam War. He received two Purple Heart medals as well as a Bronze Star with Valor. During his tour in Viet Nam Jim served as a fire team leader, squad leader, right guide, platoon sergeant, and platoon commander. Following his discharge from the Marine Corps Jim went to Fairmont State College, in Fairmont, West Virginia, receiving his under-graduate degree in Education and later received his Masters Degree in Speech Communication from West Virginia University, in Morgantown, West Virginia. He then embarked upon a thirty-eight year career in education serving as a high school and middle school teacher, principal and coach. His Marine Corps training and unique experiences in the military along with his desire to educate and mentor America's youth enabled him to inspire countless young men and women to work above and beyond their perceived talents and abilities. His belief in the attributes of positive thinking and perseverance have guided h
